Semayai party chairman, Mr. Yilkal Getnet, held discussion with US Department of State

Semayai party chairman, Mr. Yilkal Getnet, held
discussion with US Department of State Officials Assistant Secretary Mr. Tom Malinowski, Deputy Assistant Secretary, East Africa, Sudan, and South Sudan, Bureau of African Affairs, Dr. Shannon Smith, Director of the Office of African Affairs, Rolf Olson, and other staff members on the ongoing mass killings of peaceful citizens across various
regions and cities in Ethiopia by the repressive
minority ethnic apartheid regime of the TPLF.
The staff expressed their concern on the
developing mass demonstration and the
disturbing indiscriminate killings being carried out by the regime in Oromia and Amhara regions. The Assistance Secretary stated that the advice and warnings the US government officials had tried to convey to the TPLF regime officials repeatedly in official and private meetings seem to have fallen on deaf ears. Several attempts had been tried to convince the regime to open up the political space and take real genuine reforms towards a more
democratic form of governance in order to avoid popular uprisings and ethnic based conflicts to no avail.
Mr. Getnet, on his part, stated that the people’s
uprising is caused by the several years of political and economic repression by the minority TPLF regime. The lack of political freedom and, more importantly, the lack of free and fair economic system is what eventually lead to the current crises. He also stated the regime’s violent crackdown on peaceful protesters is not new but something that the regime has carried out all along since it came to power as it had no legitimacy. The only way the regime can continue to cling to power is by killing and jailing citizens who express dissent. Unless the situation is dealt with urgency and practical actions the situation could get out of hand quickly resulting in yet another failed state in the region.
The Assistant secretary mentioned that the US
Government has issued a statement condemning the killings of protesters and urged all parties involved to work together to resolve the crises.
He also mentioned that the US government will
continue to do its best to pressure the government to conduct free and fair election for
the coming local election as well as the next
general election.
Mr. Getnet responded by stating that the people
are disappointed and don’t consider the US press releases as relevant any longer. On the question of election no one, including his party, believes a real and free election will occur as long as the TPLF is in power as it is, by its very nature, an authoritarian regime that is based on deception.
The only way a peaceful transition of power can happen is by establishment a temporary care taker government followed by immediate national election under a new election commission.
