BRUSSELS, Oct 12 --
Deteriorating human rights situation in Ethiopia, killings of Oromos and the
country-wide six-month state of emergency declared Sunday October 9th by the
Ethiopian government were amongst the main issues discussed at a joint meeting
of Human Rights subcommittee and Development committee in the European
Parliament Wednesday.
Members of the two committees expressed their concerns as regards the worsening human rights situation in Ethiopia during a debate with various experts and representatives from the European Commission, and the Ethiopian Embassy.
In a statement they said they are worried by continuous public arrest and waves of violence in Ethiopia.
They also criticized the EU policy vis-a-vis Ethiopia arguing it is "falling a long way behind its own standards regarding nk.mb human rights."
