Ethiopia gets sharp criticism of violence against protesters

Addis Ababa (AFP) Ethiopian security forces leading a bloody campaign against peaceful protests in Oromia region outside Addis Ababa, according to Human Rights Watch.
Almost every day, people killed and subjected to arbitrary arrests, writes human rights organization said in a statement.
Demonstrators began in November as a result of the government's plan to develop the areas around the capital, which led many local farmers feared being forcibly.
Oromia is home region to the Oromo, who constitute 30 percent of the population.
The government dropped urban development plans on January 12, but the protests still continued, and it also has official brutal reactions, according to HRW.
- To flood the Oromia with federal security forces shows the authorities' profound contempt for peaceful protests as students, farmers and other dissidents are behind, says Leslie Lefkow, deputy for HRWs Africa section. (© NTB)
