Joins Ethiopia’s Exiled Journalists
Awramba Times (Phoenix, Arizona) – Serkalem Fasil, award-winning Ethiopian journalist and former co-publisher of the weekly newspapers Asqual, Menilik, and Satenaw has left Ethiopia with her son yesterday.
According to our confidential sources, Serkalem has already departed to the United states and detail has not been given on the matter.
In November 2005, Serkalem was arrested along with thirteen newspaper editors including her husband, Award winning blogger, Eskinder Nega. Eskinder has been jailed seven times by the Ethiopian government and is still in prison under the nation’s sweeping anti-terror legislation. He has been convicted and sentenced to 18 years in June 2012 on trumped up terrorism and treason charges. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and CPJ have condemned the ruling as baseless and politically motivated.
Serkalem Fasil won a “Courage in Journalism Award” from the International Women’s Media Foundation in 2007.
