The Indian Ocean Newsletter has recently learned that four generals were
recently sanctioned by the Ethiopian chief of staff, General Samora Yunis for
“plotting” against him in denouncing a certain degree of favoritism in his
decisions. Two of them have been retired and the other two have been demoted.
The four generals are: Saere Mekonen (Northern Command), Abebaw Tadesse
(Central Command), Tadesse Werede (Peace Keeping Forces) and Mola Haile Mariam
(aviation). Tadesse Werede was recalled to Addis Ababa and arrested as soon as
he stepped out of the aeroplane. His home was searched and he has been placed
under house arrest. Abebaw Tadesse was also recalled to Addis Ababa and
replaced in his functions by General Yohannes Gebre Meskel who is a loyal
supporter of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the mainstay of the
ruling coalition.
