Azeb Mesfin’s influence has been on the wane since the death of
her husband, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. She will now jettison some of her
political mandates.
As was disclosed in The Indian Ocean Newsletter last December (ION 1369), Azeb Mesfin, the widow of former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, is distancing herself from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF, mainstay of the ruling EPRDF coalition). To be sure, the political faction she led in the party together with Simon Bereket is very clearly on the way out and Azeb Mesfin’s dream of becoming mayor of Addis Ababa is further away than ever. She has recently asked to be relieved of her functions in the TPLF leadership, where she had been appointed by her husband, and is now considering resigning from the party altogether so she can have more time to run the Meles Zenawi Foundation. In doing so, she would not have to declare her assets, which the main TPLF leaders could be obliged to do. In addition, Azeb Mesfin could also relinquish her role of number 2 in the EFFORT consortium of companies close to the TPLF
