Ethiopia has blocked social media sites as new Oromo protests hit the country

Ethiopia’s government has blocked the internet following days of protests and unease that resulted in deaths and injuries in universities and towns across the East African nation.

In Chelenko town in Oromia region, media reports noted the killing of 16 people aged between 15 and 60 years, including family members who were harvesting sorghum on a farm. The family was reportedly not aware of the initial demonstrations in a nearby village, where locals blamed the killing of a prominent member of the community by the controversial Somali special forces known as the Liyu. This was followed by heightened ethnic tension in campuses, where students were allegedly killed at the hands of security forces.

As such, from Dec. 12, internet users in Ethiopia started mentioning that they couldn’t access several social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Moses Karanja, a doctoral candidate at University of Toronto and researcher at the Citizen Lab, said network scans on the state-owned operator Ethio Telecom confirmed that the websites were inaccessible. The government has a monopoly over the provision of mobile and internet services, and users couldn’t access these sites without using virtual private networks. The throttling of the sites didn’t, however, extend to WhatsApp or Telegram, an increasingly popular application in the country, according to Karanja.

“We have seen internet disruptions in Ethiopia serve as canaries in the mine of state violence in the past,” Karanja says. “With the state of emergency lifted, the recent university unrests may be a risk Addis Ababa is not willing to take lightly.”

Ethiopian blogger Befeqadu Hailu, who resides in Addis Ababa, also confirmed that he was using a VPN to talk to Quartz on Twitter’s direct message. “Some provinces in Amhara region, Wollo for example, mobile data is totally stopped and people have to get connected through broadband lines to surf the internet,” he said.

This is not the first time that Ethiopia has shut down the internet or blocked social media sites following anti-government protests. Ethiopia, the second most populous country in sub-Saharan Africa, has one of the lowest rates of internet and mobile phone connectivity in the world. Since November 2015, when protests against the marginalization and persecution of the Oromos and Amharas rocked the country, the government cut off connections either in specific regions or throughout the country.

Mobile internet remained down across the country after officials announced nationwide emergency in Oct. 2016, with the state banning the use of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to communicate or document the ongoing unrest. The government also doubles down on surveillance, using sophisticated commercial spyware to target dissidents and opposition media outlets. The opposition Ethiopian Satellite Television said it was recently targeted with “heavy jamming,” leading it to go off air in Ethiopia.

Observers say the killings in Chelenko sent a shockwave across the country, forcing authorities in Oromia region to denounce the killings and call for an inquiry. The US embassy also said it was “troubled and saddened” by the violence in the town, calling for constructive means to resolve differences and hold those responsible accountable. But the spate of violence also highlights the discontents of Ethiopia’s much-lauded ethnic federalism. This is especially true of the Somali and Oromo communities, who share a long internal border and have for decades been competing for resources and land. Recent deadly clashes have led to the death of hundreds and displacement of tens of thousands others.

Mohammed Ademo, the editor of the OPride, a website that reports on Oromo diaspora and advocates for social justice in Ethiopia, says increasing violence and government heavy-handedness has led to calls for nationwide protests. And “that’s why authorities decided to throttle the internet to limit the flow of information and possible coordination in anticipation of further protests.”

On Wednesday, the TPLF Central Committee voted to elect new chairpersons and new members to the four vacant seats of the 9-seats Executive Committee.

Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD), 58(?), joined TPLF’s armed struggle in 1978, quitting his studies at Addis Ababa University. He resumed education in 1991, immediately after toppling the Derg regime.

He graduated B.Sc. and MSc in Electrical Engineering from Addis Ababa University and M.A. in Public Policy and Management from the University of London.

Debretsion Gebremichael obtained his PhD in 2011, from Capella University, with dissertation on the link between information technology and poverty alleviation in remote parts of Ethiopia.

Debretsion Gebremichael was appointed Minister of the newly established Ministry of Information Communication Technology Development in 2010. The Ministry was an agency until then, with Debretsion Gebremichael as its Director General.

Debretsion Gebremichael joined the Executive Committee in 2010 and became Dep Chairman immediately after Meles Zenawi’s passing in 2012.

He has become the fourth chairperson in TPLF history today receiving 36 of the 39 votes cast.

Fetlework Gebregziabher, nom de gurre “monjorino”, 56, joined TPLF armed struggle in 1979.

Fetlework graduated in MSc in from the London School of Economics in early 2000s, securing the scholarship opportunity on her own. Her decision to go to London, against the objection of the party leadership, caused problems on her employment when she returned.

Fetelwork served as Director General of the federal Finance Intelligence Center until 2015. She was elected to the Central Committee of TPLF in 2006 and to the Executive Committee in 2015.

Fetlework was appointed as head of Public Relation of the TPLF Secretariat from 2015-2016 and Urban sector head of the EPRDF Secretariat from 2016-2017.

Fetlework was elected today as the first woman deputy Chairperson in 42 years of the organization’s history.

Asmelash Woldeselassie, Abraham Tekeste, Getachew Reda and Kerya Ibrahim were elected today as members of the TPLF executive committee.

Asmelash Woldeselassie is a veteran of the armed struggle and Government Chip Whip in the House of Peoples Representatives since 2015. Asmelash studied his first and second degrees in law and is a PhD candidate currently.

Abraham Tekeste (PhD) is the minister of the Finance and Economic Cooperation (MoFEC) since 2016. He was State Minister at the National Planning Commission from 2015-16 and State Minister of MoFEC from 2010-2015. He obtained PhD in Economics from a university in Switzerland.

Getachew Reda, 43, a graduate of the law schools of Addis Ababa University and the University of Alabama, is the Director General of Legal Research Institute since 2016. He served as head of the federal Government Communication Affairs Office, with the rank of minister, and assistant of the Prime Minister since 2013.

Kerya Ibrahim was head of Urban Sector at the TPLF Secretariat. She served in Women Affairs Bureaus of Mekelle city and of Tigray region. Her election to the Executive Committee came as a surprise.

Abraham Tekeste, Getachew Reda and Kerya Ibrahim didn’t take part in the TPLF armed struggle. Tedros Adhanom used to be the only person without armed struggle background to have joined the TPLF executive committee. His seat was vacated last May as he left to lead the World Health Organization (WHO).

The rest of the Executive Committee members are Getachew Assefa, Director General of National Intellegence Security Service (NISS), Alem Gebrewahd, head of TPLF Secretariat, and Adisalem Balema, vice President of Tigray region.

Update:

Getachew Assefa declined nomination for the chairperson position, despite strong support from the Central Committee.

The Central Committee voted on the gimgema results of others members of the Central Committee since the weekend. Berhane Kidanemariam (aka Maret) was suspended from the Central Committee. Two other members were given reprimand.

Several members of the Central Committee escaped suspension because the two-third vote requirement for the measure was not met.

ሰሜን ኢትዮጵያ- መቀሌ

ዝሆኖቹ ረጅሙን ስብሰባ ተቀምጠዋል። የሚያስጨንቃቸው የኢትዮጵያ ጉዳይ አይደለም። ጓዛቸውን አስጠቅልሎ ለሁለት ወራት መቀሌ የከተታቸው ስለኢትዮጵያውያን ተጨንቀው ተጠበው አልነበረም። የትግራይን የበላይነት ለተጨማሪ ዓመታት አስጠብቀን እንዴት እንቆያለን? የሚለው ላይ በአካሄድ ተለያይተው እንጂ። 77ቢሊየን ብር ዱቄት ያደረገውን አባይ ጸሀዬን መርቀው፡ አባይ ወልዱን ረግመው ዝቅ አድርገዋል። የማዕከላዊ ሰቆቃ እስር ቤት አዛዥ፡ ናዛዥ፡ ገራፊ አስገራፊ፡ የሆነውን ጌታቸው አሰፋን ሸልመው አዜብን ሸኝተዋል። በየነ ምክሩን አዋርደው፡ ጌታቸው ረዳን ከፍ አድርገዋል። ጉልቻ ቀያይረው፡ ከዝንጀሮ መሀል አንዱን ሊቀመንበር መርጠው፡ ወንበር ተለዋውጠው ከጨረሱ በኋላ ለኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ ''የምስራች፡ ምስር ብላ'' ሊሉት ተዘጋጅተዋል።

ሙስናን ህወሀቶች አላነሷትም። ከመሃላቸው በዚህ ጉዳይ የሚተርፍ አልነበረምና። አቅምና ብቃት ማነስም ለግምገማ አልቀረበም። ሁሉም አቅመ ቢስ፡ የደናቁርት ስብስብ ናቸውና። አባይ ወልዱ የተገመገመው የትግራይ ተወላጆች በአማራ ክልል ጉዳት ሲደርስባቸው የወሰድከው እርምጃ ዝግ ያለ ነው፡ የወሰኑ ጉዳይ መቋጪያ ሳያገኝ ተራዘመ የሚል ነበር። ወልቃይትን በጠራራ ጸሀይ የወሰደው፡ ራያን ከአማራ ነጥቆ ወደ ትግራይ የከለለው፡ ግጨውን እጅ ጠምዝዞ የነጠቀው፡ ከምንም በላይ በመቶዎች የሚቆጠሩ የአማራ ወጣቶችን በጥይት ደብድቦ የገደለው ህወሀት፡ ለፖኣለቲካ ትርፍ ተብሎ ጭረት ሳይነካቸው በአውሮፕላን ተሳፍረው ወደትግራይ የተወሰዱትን የትግራይ ተወላጆች ጉዳይ አንገብጋቢ አጀንዳ አድርጎ ነበር ሊቀመንበሩን የገመገመውና ከቦታቸው ያነሳው።

በተንኮልና ሴራ ያላረጀው ስብሃት

የ86ዓመቱ ሽማግሌ በስጋ አርጅቶ፡ በተንኮል ጎልምሶ ዘንድሮም ብቅ ብሏል። በህወሀት የፓርቲም ሆነ በፌደራል መንግስት ውስጥ የያዘው ስልጣን የለም። ሆኖም ከጀርባ መዘወሩን ማሽከርከሩን ከዘመናትም በኋላ አላቆመም። በተንኮል ተፈጥሮ፡ በሴራ አድጎ፡ በሸፍጥ ሸብቷል። የአረቄ ብዛት የተንኮል አቅሙን አላደከመውም። ሰውነቱ ውስጥ በቀን የሚገባው የአልኮል መጠን፡ የአእምሮውን ሴራ የመጎንጎን ክፍል አልጎዳውም። ከ6 በላይ ህንፍሽፍሾችን በአሸናፊነት የተሻገረ፡ ስንቱን የህወሀት አመራር መንግሎ ያስወገደ፡ በስተርጅናም በጥሎ ማለፍ ታክቲክ ሻምፒዮን ሆኖ እየታየ ያለ ሰው ነው። የአጼ ዮሀንስን ዘውድ ያስመለሰ ተብሎ በታሪክ እንዲጻፍለት እየታተረ ያለ፡ ይህቺን ታሪኩን በህወሀት መዘገብ ውስጥ መስፈሩን ሳያረጋግጥ ሞቱን ላይጨልጥ ለራሱ ቃልኪዳን የገባ ለመሆኑም ይነገርለታል። የህወሀት መሀንዲስ ነው። King maker ነው ይሉታል። በእሱ ያልተቀባ ለስልጣን የማይበቃ፡ በሱ የተረገመ ደግሞ ስልጣን የማይበረክትለት ይባልለታልም።

ስብሃት ነጋ ለጊዜው የአሸናፊነት አክሊሉን ደፍቷል። በአልኮል ብዛት ጎሮሮው ሲርርር የምትልበት ስብሃት ከቀን እንቅልፍ ጋር እየታገለ፡ የመቀሌውን ስብሰባ በድል አጠናቋል። በእርግጥ ውስኪ የጠበሰው ፊቱ ደስታውን ደብቆበታል። እንደልማዱ ቀጣዩን የህውሀት አለቃ እንዲሰየም አድርጓል። የሚጠራረጉትን ጠራርጓል። የሚፈልጋቸውን አስገብቷል። በጊዜ እጅ የሰጠው በረከት ስምዖንም ለስብሃት ውዳሴ ማቅረቡ ተሰምቷል።

በእርግጥ ድሉ ጊዚያዊ ነው። ተጀመረ እንጂ አላበቃም። ህወሀት በማይድን በሽታ የተለከፈ፡ ቀኑን እየቆጠረ ያለ ድርጅት ነው። አቶ ገብረመድህን አርዓያ እንዳሉት ህወሀት ሟሙቷል። መሪዎቹም አርጅተዋል። ከተፈጥሮአዊ ሞት በፊት መቃብር የሚወስዳቸው ማዕበል ከደጃፋቸው ደርሷል። ለእነሱ ግን አይታያቸውም።

ከወዲሁ ድለቃው ተጀምሯል። ኢቲቪ የህውሀትን ማላገጫ በሰበር አቅርቦታል። ሪፖርተር በጉጉት የሚጠበቅ ብሎታል። የፓርቲና የመንግስት ሚዲያዎች ለኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ የብስራት ያህል የመቀሌውን ስብሰባ ውጤት ሊያበስሩ አፋችውን እያሟሹ ነው። የክልል መንግስታት የደስታ መግለጫ እንዲያወጡ ይደረጋል። አጋር፡ አባል፡ አሯሯጭና ደሞዝ ተከፋይ ተቃዋሚ ፓርቲዎች ለህወሀት ስብሰባ ስኬት ''የእንኳን ደስ አላችሁ'' መልዕክት ከሰሞኑ ይዥጎደጎዳል። በየከተማው ያለው በሊግ፡ በፎረም፡ በጥቃቅንና አነስተኛ የተደራጀ፡ በሴልና በመሰረታዊ ድርጅት መዋቅር የተሰገሰገ ካድሬ በያለበት ሰልፍ ወጥቶ በእልልታና ጭፈራ ለመቀሌው ስብሰባ ውጤት ደስታውን እንዲገልጽ ይደረጋል። በቃ! የኢትዮጵያ ችግር ተፈቷል። ሰንኮፉ ተነቅሏል። ይለናል ሃይለማርያምም በቴሌቪዥን መስኮት ብቅ ብሎ።

ከወዲሁ የህወሀት የፌስቡክ ሰራዊት ቄጤማ እየጎዘጎዘ፡ ፈንዲሻ እየነሰነሰ ነው። የህወሀት ስብሰባ ኢትዮጵያውያንን ያስጨነቃቸው ጉዳይ እንዲመስል የሚችሉትን እየተፈራገጡ ነው። አንዳንድ የህወሀት ደጋፊዎችም በዱቄትና አመድ መሃል የሚደረገውን ፉክክር የሂላሪና ትራምፕ ዓይነት አስመስለው ማን ይመረጣል፡ ማን ይወገዳል በሚል ትኩረት እንድንሰጠው እየተሯሯጡ ነው። ያስጨነቀን የሞንጆሪኖ መምጣት፡ እንቅልፍ የነሳን የአዜብ መወገድ፡ ትካዜ ውስጥ የከተተን የጌታቸው ረዳ ስራ አስፈጻሚ ውስጥ መግባት ይመስል አጓጊና ልብ ሰቃይ የሆሊውድ ፊልም አድርገን እንድንከታተለው ተፈልጓል።

የቁጭት ዘመን አልፏል

የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ ጆሮው ከመቀሌ አይደለም። ይልቅስ ከነጻነት ሃይሎች የድል ዜና ተቀስሯል። የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ ቀልቡ የህውሀት ስብሰባ ላይ አልነበረም። ይልቅስ የኦሮሚያ ቄሮዎችን ገድል ፡ የአማራ ፋኖዎችን ተጋድሎ፡ የጋሞጎፋ ጀግኖችን ውሎ፡ በመከታተል ተጠምዷል። የመቀሌው ቲያትር የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ ጉዳይ አይደለም። አሁን ዘመን ተቀይሯል። የቁጭት ጊዜ አብቅቷል። የእርምጃ ምዕራፍ አንድ ብሏል። እየተደበደቡ ከቤት መግባት ቀርቷል። እየተገደሉ ማልቀስ አሮጌ ሆኗል። ግራን ሲመቱ ቀኝን መስጠት በትላንት ታሪክ ውስጥ ገብቷል። ሲደበደብ፡ የሚደበድብ፡ ሲገደል፡ የሚገድል፡ ግራውን ሲመቱት፡ መልሶ በጥፊ የሚያጮል ኢትዮጵያዊ ሆ ብሎ ተነስቷል።

የኦሮሞ ቄሮዎውች የህውሀትን ዝርፊያ በየከተሞቹ መግታት ጀምረዋል። ስኳር፡ ቡና የጫኑ የህወሀት ተሽከርካሪዎች እርምጃ ይወሰድባቸዋል። በባህርዳር ህዝብ ሲገድል ሲያስገድል የነበረው ኮማንደር ደሳለኝ ልጃለም በነጻነት ሃይሎች ተገድሏል። በጋሞጎፋ ሳውላ ግብር አንከፍልም ያሉ ነዋሪዎች የወረዳውን ገቢዎች ጽ/ቤት ዶግ አመድ አድርገዋል። በጋምቤላም የከተማው አስተዳደር ገቢዎች ጽ/ቤት እንዲቃጠል ተደርጓል። በአጭሩ የቁጭት ዘመን ወጥቷል። የእርምጃ ዘመን ገብቷል። ህወሀቶች ጉልቻ ብትቀያየሩ፡ ከመሃላችሁ አንድ መርጣችሁ አለቃ ብትሰይሙ፡ ብታስወግዱ፡ ብትሾሙ የራሳችሁ ጉዳይ ነው---ብሏል የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ።

የትግራይ ህዝብ ሚና

ሰሞኑን በማህበራዊ ሚዲያዎች የሚዘዋወር በኢትዮቲዩብ የቀረበ የአንዲት የትግራይ ወ/ሮ ቃለመጠይቅ እያቃረኝም ቢሆን ሰማሁት። የትግራይን ህዝብ በዚህች ሴትዮ ሚዛን ላስቀምጥ አልችልም። በሷም መነጽር የትግራይን ህዝብ መመልከቱ ተገቢ ነው ብዬ አላምንም። ሆኖም እንደዚህች ዓይነቶቹ ሰዎች የጎረበጠውን ይበልጥ የሚያሻክሩ፡ የህዝብ ለህዝብ ግንኙነቱን በጥርጣሬ ውስጥ የሚደፍቁ በመሆናቸው ጉዳታቸው የትየሌለ ነው። ስለትግራይ ህዝብ ዝምታ አጥብቆ እየተጨነቀ ያለውና ይሄ ህዝብ ራሱን ህወሀት ከተሰኘ የዘራፊዎችና ነፍሰገዳዮች ቡድን ነጥሎ እንዲቀርብ እየጠየቀ ያለው የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ የእነዚህ ዓይነት ሰዎችን በድንቁርና የተለወሰ ንግግር ሲሰማ ስለትግራይ ህዝብ ተስፋ እንዳይቆርጥ እሰጋለሁ።

በእንግሊዝ የህውሀት ደጋፊዎች የመቀሌው ስብሰባ መቋጨቱን ተከትሎ መግለጫ አውጥተዋል። ዘራፍ ብለዋል። አጆሃ፡ ጀግናው ወያናይ፡ እንደብረት የጠነከረ የማይገረስስ ሲነኩት የሚያርድ ተራራን ያንቀጠቀጠ ዓይነት ፉከራና ቀረርቶ አሰምተዋል። እነዚህ ዘረኝነት ከደማቸው ሰርጾ ከአጥንታቸው የገባባቸው የህውሀት ደጋፊዎች በመግለጫቸው እንዲህ የሚል አስፍረዋል ‘’ሁሉም ነገር ወደትግራይ እየሄደ ነው; የትግራይ ተወላጆች ከሌላው የኢትዮጵያ ህዝበ የበለጠ ጥቅም ያገኛሉ እየተባለ የሚወራውን የውሸት ፕሮፖጋንዳ ትክክል እንዳልሆነ የሚያስረዱ መረጃዎች ወደ ህዝብ እንዲቀርቡ::’’

የህወሀት ደጋፊዎች ዘረኝነት ልቦናቸውን ስለጋረደ ለማስተዋል የሚያስችል ጠብታ አቅምም የላቸውም። የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ የሚኖርበትን እውነት በፕሮፖጋንዳ ጭነት ለመለወጥ መፍጨርጨራቸው አስገራሚ ነው። አሁንም እነዚህን በሌላው ኪሳራ ምቾትና ድሎታቸውን አስጠብቀው እሰከመጨረሻው ለመዝለቅ ቅንጣት ታክል የማይሰቀጥጣቸውን ሰዎች ከትግራይ ህዝብ ጋር አድርጎ መውሰድ ስህተት ላይ ይጥላል። ነገር ግን በቋፍ ላይ ላለው የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ ይህ ዓይነቱ ጭፍንነት ስለትግራይ ህዝብ ጥያቄ እንዲያነሳ ይገፋፋዋል። በውጭ ሀገራት በየፓል ቶኩ፡ የየአከባቢ ሬዲዮ ጣቢያዎች፡ በድረገጾች በትግራይ ህዝብ ስም እየማሉና እየተገዘቱ ሌላውን የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ የሚያበሻቅጡ ጥቂት የትግራይ ጽንፈኞች ድምጻቸው ጎልቶ የሚሰማ በመሆኑ በወደፊቱ የትግራይ ህዝብ አብሮነት ላይ ግርዶሽ እንዳይጥሉ በእርግጥም እሰጋለሁ።

እናም የትግራይ ህዝብ ዝምታውን መስበር አለበት። መቀሌ ላይ ለሁለት ወራት የተጎለተው የዘረኞች ስብስብ በኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ ላይ የሚያደሰውን ግፍና መከራ በአስቸኳይ እንዲያቆም መጠየቅ መጀመር ይጠበቅበታል። በማዕከላዊ፡ ቂሊንጦ፡ ቃሊቲ፡ ዝዋይና በተለያዩ የኢትዮጵያ እስር ቤቶች ስቃይ እያየ ያለው ወገናቸው፡ መቀሌ በተሰብሰቡትና በስሙ በሚነግዱት ጥቂቶች ትዕዛዝ የሚፈጸም በመሆኑ ይህ እንዲቆም ያደርግ ዘንድ የትግራይ ህዝብ ውሳኔው ይጠበቃል። ጊዜው እየረፈደ ነው።

በመጨረሻም

የሀራሬ ሰማይ ፈክቷል። ምድሩ በተስፋ ለምልሟል። ሀራሬ በጭፈራ ላይ ናት። በደስታ ሰክራለች። የአንድ ሰው ፊት እያየ ያደገው 2 ትውልድ ዛሬ ጮቤ እየረገጠ ነው። የዚምቧቡዌ አየር በነጻነት ጠረን ታውዷል። ዛሬ ልዩ ቀን ናት። የ37 ዓመቱ የሙጋቤ ዘመን አክትሟል። የ93ዓመቱ አዛውንት በመጨረሻው ሰዓት ከውርደት ስንብት ተርፈዋል። የሙጋቤ ነገር በታሪክ ማህደር ሰፍሮ ፋይሉ ተዘግቶ መደርደሪያ ላይ ተሰቅሏል። አዲስ ቀን፡ አዲስ ዚምቧቡዌ።

የኢትዮጵያም ሰማይ በጉም ጠቁሮ አይቀርም። ከዚህ በላይ ምድሯ በተስፋ ጥም እንደገረጣ አይዘልቅም። በየከተሞቿ ልጆቿ በአጋዚ ጥይት መውደቃቸው ይቆም ዘንድ ጊዜው ደርሷል። ኢትዮጵያ የለበሰችውን የሀዘን ከል ታወልቃለች። ዘረኛው፡ ቅጥረኛው፡ ወንጀለኛው፡ መንግስታዊ አሸባሪው ስርዓትን እያየ ያደገው ትውልድ መድረሻ አጥቶ መንከራተቱም ያበቃል። ከኢትዮጵያውያን ጫንቃ ላይ እንደ አልቅት ተጣብቆ ላለመውረድ የሚንገታገተው የህወሀት ቡድንም በህዝብ ማዕበል ተጠራርጎ የሚወግድበት ጊዜ ሩቅ አይደለም። አዲስ ቀን፡ አዲስ ኢትዮጵያ በቅርብ ቀን።

ባዶ ምኞት አይደለም። ሰማይ ላይ የተሰቅለ የማይደረስ ተስፋም አይደለም። አፍንጫዬ ስር የሚሸተኝ የነጻነት መዓዛ እንጂ።
